What is an invention?

An invention is defined as a new machine, device, or process that has been created to improve and enhance various functions or outcomes. This definition encompasses the idea that an invention represents a creative leap or innovation, leading to advancements in technology and efficiency. In the context of the Industrial Revolution, which was marked by significant technological innovations, inventions played a crucial role in driving industrial growth and transformation.

While improvements on existing methods can certainly lead to better outcomes, they do not constitute a new invention in and of themselves, as inventions must originate from novel ideas or constructs. The concept of community organization and abstract theories in political economics are not applicable to the definition of an invention because they deal more with human interaction and thought processes rather than tangible creations or technological advancements.
